About the Event

Forget everything you have come to expect from design events. Sydney Indesign is a unique trade event launching in 2013, incorporating the successful Saturday in Design (SID) format, and taking it to the next level.


Sydney Indesign: THE EXPERIENCE is an opportunity for exhibitors to showcase to the industry what they are all about – their personality, culture and energy - and gives our audience of architects, interiors designers and creatives the opportunity to discover new design, build their industry knowledge and develop meaningful relationships. It’s about educating, networking, socialising and exchanging ideas.

This year, an expansion of the program will ensure the event affords visitors the chance to experience all the best design Sydney has to offer, taking over the city from Thursday 15 - Saturday 17 August, redefining and reimagining the design event experience for both exhibitors and visitors.

Essentially all the bits you love about SID are still there; all we’ve done is re-imagine some elements, reboot and enhance the experience. The buses, the precincts, the showrooms, the launches, the creative collaborations and the best new products by global leaders in the design industry are all back in 2013 – by popular demand. In addition we are pleased to introduce: Galleria.

Galleria is our curated exhibition space - over 3000 square meters at the Australian Technology Park in Eveleigh. Complementing the existing showroom and precinct circuits, Galleria will exhibit innovative design in ways the Australian design scene has never before experienced.

    The evolution of Saturday in Design sees the internationally acclaimed industry event take on a sleek new look, a dynamic new approach to showcasing the best in design and a fresh new name.

    Incorporating all the elements that have defined a decade of Saturday in Design, the expansion of the three-day program guarantees a breadth of design industry coverage unlike anything before seen in Australia.

    The showroom-based design event alternates between Sydney and Melbourne with Brisbane Indesign the biannual event for the Queensland design community and Singapore Indesign bringing together the best of Southeast Asia. Indesign is also committed to nurturing new design through the Launch Pad Emerging Design Program.

    Indesign Group currently publishes five major titles: Indesign magazine, presenting the best in commercial, retail, civic, institutional and residential interiors and architecture from Australasia and the globe; DQ [design quarterly] magazine, reflecting the people and products driving the Australasian design sector; and Habitus, featuring residential architecture, design, products and people drawn from the rich design landscape of Australasia, South-East and South Asia.

    Indesign Media Group has been producing specialised print and online media and events for design and architecture audiences for over 10 years. As well as this, they are now catering to the rapidly growing high-end design-savvy consumer via Habitus, the first magazine for the design hunter.

    Q. Do I have to catch the bus or can I walk/drive?
    A. You can move between showrooms at your own pace using your own transportation – hop on a bus, take a walk, jump in a car or taxi. The free bus service is available for your convenience.

    Q. Why do I need to register?
    A. To make the day as easy and hassle-free as possible, registration is essential. Once you have registered you will receive your personalised visitor pass via email one to two weeks prior to the event. Your pass will be your ticket to all participating showrooms on the day and on the bus service, letting you travel from location to location quickly and conveniently.

    Q. Can I register my whole office as a team or do I need to register people individually?
    A. You can now register yourself with a group of up to 10 colleagues. To do this simply complete the 'Group Registration' form found on the Sydney Indesign registration page.

    Q. Can I bring someone who hasn’t pre-registered for the event?
    A. Yes! There will be registration facilities available at all participating showrooms on the day, although we do encourage guests to pre-register for the opportunity to win fabulous prizes.

    Q. Why do I need a visitor pass?
    Think of your visitor pass as the most important form of identification you will need on the day. Use it when you pop in and out of showrooms. Your day pass will help others identify who you are and provide showrooms with your contact details.

    Q. What is the event handbook?
    A. An indispensable tool for the day, the Sydney Indesign handbook provides you with valuable maps, company information and special company day plans. The free event handbook will be available for you in the week leading up to the event on the Sydney Indesign website and in hard copy at all participating showrooms on the day. For up-to-the-minute information stay tuned to the website.

    Q. Is there a Sydney Indesign app?
    Yes! This year we are very excited to be launching the Sydney Indesign app for Android and iOS to help you navigate the event. You can see what exhibitors have planned for the day, find out who’s taking part in The Project, create your own personalised day plan, receive notifications of timed events and watch what people are doing throughout the event via social media feeds.

    Q. What do showrooms have planned?
    A. Each showroom plans individually, with the product always the star of the day. In addition, a selection of delights such as food and beverages, live entertainment, presentations and door prizes offer plenty of opportunities to take a break and indulge.

    For those of you who didn’t attend last year, below are some of the questions about Sydney Indesign that we get asked most:

    Q. Where do I start my day?
    A. The event runs from 9am – 6pm, so simply start at any showroom and choose your own adventure! Check out the website before the event to help plan your day and look out for our highlighter pink flags and decals marking showroom entrances throughout town.

    Q. I heard there are buses to take me around to the showrooms.
    A. Yes, we have arranged for complimentary buses to transport you from precinct to precinct on Saturday only from 9am – 6pm. While every effort is made for a bus to arrive at each location at approximately 15-minute intervals, delays may occur. Bus maps are contained within the Sydney Indesign Handbook and will also be available on this website closer to the event, in a downloadable PDF format.

    Q. Where and when do the complimentary buses start?
    A. Buses start at 9am at different locations around the city on the Saturday and travel in designated loops throughout the whole day. The buses do not start at one particular showroom; it is a hop-on, hop-off service.

The addition of Galleria is an exciting new addition to Sydney Indesign. Launching on Thursday 15 August, Galleria is located across 3,000m2 at the Australian Technology Park - 2 Locomotive Street, Eveleigh.

Friday 17 August

Sydney Indesign (Galleria, Event Day) 9am – 5pm
Galleria will be an exciting new personalised precinct within the event that captures the essence of what made SiD appealing – effortless transitions, relaxed networking, tailored catering, and welcome variation.

Sydney Indesign (Showroom, Event Day) 12pm – 6pm
300+ brands displayed by over 80 companies in 50+ locations visitors can experience The Project installations, product launches, special timed events and more.

Sydney Indesign (Showroom, Evening Events) 6pm – late
Intimate VIP events organized by individual showrooms at their discretion. Refer to the exhibitor profiles to check out who is hosting, some are invitation only.

This year, Sydney Indesign places special emphasis on showcasing the newest trends in design thought. We’ll be launching our inaugural WorkLife event, the first in a series presented by Indesign Magazine. This will be an incisive day of seminars and debates over ‘The Future of the Workspace’.

In the showrooms, Habitus Magazine collaborates with Sydney Indesign to present LiveLife, which extends the conversation about the future of living in design.

In the central Galleria venue, we’ve established Indesign Podium; a dedicated, future-focussed design thinktank. Indesign Podium opens on Thursday to host WorkLife, and on Friday and Saturday it becomes a platform for our industry network. Brands, designers and creatives share knowledge in any creative format, with discussions, workshops, educational sessions, product launches and more.

Exploring Process

The Project was first introduced in 2008, as a means of heightening creative interactivity between suppliers, retailers, designers and event-goers is now one of the most highly anticipated features of Sydney Indesign. The Project showcases product in new and conceptual ways and gives Sydney Indesign visitors an eye-popping in-showroom experience.

On each subsequent year, The Project has been given a theme providing a basis for design ideas. The first being Sense (Sydney 2009), followed by Motion (Melbourne 2010), Connect (Singapore 2011), Element (Sydney 2011), Hybrid (Singapore 2012) and Active Environments (Melbourne 2012).

This year participants are encouraged to explore and stretch the theme of, Process, which is sure to result in some thought provoking and inspiring concepts.
